  • Be an asset to the local office by professionally representing BFS with both internal and external customers.
  • Advise the local office and Risk Director as necessary on new and existing transactions.
  • Instrumental in growing the business while controlling risk through deal structure.
  • Maintain provisioning and bad debts at or below budgeted levels by monitoring portfolio risk trends and performance via RiskFactor and Factor Soft.
  • Conducts ongoing sampling of new deal sanctions to determine compliance with established BFS policies and procedures.
  •  Assists in and helps complete the underwriting of all Large Ticket sanctions and assists in the completion of other sanctions as necessary.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 10 years’ experience in lending with operations and risk experience.
  • Master’s Degree plus generally 5 years’ experience in lending.
  • Knowledge of field examination techniques and in-depth understanding of Risk and Legal issues in relation to secured lending is required. 
  • Experience as a Senior Operations/Credit Person and an Accounting/Auditing/Commercial Lending background is preferable.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in an office environment and to act independently when required and must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and computer literacy skills are necessary.


Job Description

  • Participate in monthly portfolio reviews and report key findings to Risk Director.
  • Reviews all new sanctions for completeness and adherence to underwriting standards and KPCs. Sample results of due diligence, credit and background searches (Client and Client’s Owners), financial statements and field examinations to verify proper analysis and disclosure in the sanction.
  • Reviews reports generated by RiskFactor for potential issues and raises critical concerns to local management and/or the Risk Director with emphasis on accounts with high involvement, material overadvances, significant changes in and/or high risk scores, is cash desperate or is a material collect-out account.
  • Assists with collect-out accounts as determined by the Local Office or the Risk Director. Discuss collect-out and other problem accounts with the Risk Director.
  • Attends all required risk group functions and participates in team phone calls.
  • Conducts internal audits of other offices as required.
  • Other duties as defined by the local office.

Key Skills

  • Able to provide proper management, training and guidance to junior members of the risk team.
  • Strong understanding of local and regional legal issues and experience in bankruptcy (Chapters 11, 7 and DIP facilities or Canadian equivalents), receiverships, assignment for the benefit of creditors, compositions and other specialized legal situations.
  • Manages multiple priorities in an organized manner to meet deadlines. Reassess priorities on the go and adjusts others expectations accordingly. Copes well with demands of the job and manages their time efficiently.
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to motivate, influence and inspire others.
  • Superior ability to exercise independent judgment and apply prudent risk mitigation principles.
